Fair Trials’ letter to the Secretary General of INTERPOL on Tataloo case

February 3, 2020

On 3 February 2020, Fair Trials wrote to Jürgen Stock, Secretary-General of INTERPOL, to request clarification regarding the case of Amir-Hossein Maqsoudlou, also known as 'Tataloo'.

Turkish authorities have apparently stated that the arrest occurred on the basis of an INTERPOL Red Notice issued by Iran, and Fair Trials is seeking to clarify whether INTERPOL's systems were used in the case.

Mr. Maqsoudlou is an Iranian rapper who reportedly left Iran in 2017, where his music is banned on the grounds of being ‘Westernised and immoral’, and he has been an outspoken critic of the Iranian government and its record on human rights and freedom of speech. It has been reported that Mr. Maqsoudlou was arrested last week in Turkey, where he had been living for several months, on the grounds of a Red Notice issued by Iran on accusations of ‘encouraging citizens, especially youth, to use drugs’.We have serious concerns that the Iranian government may be attempting to restrict Mr. Maqsoudlou’s legitimate artistic expression through the guise of this offence.
