Data Expert for the Fair Trials Index Project
Fair Trials Europe is seeking an experienced Data Expert to contribute to our Fair Trials Index Project, which aims to create an Index measuring the extent to which criminal justice systems worldwide comply with the right to a fair trial, by assessing the implementation of its various rights and safeguards.
The Index will:
- Create global awareness of the set of rights and safeguards that constitute the right to a fair trial, from the moment of arrest until a judicial decision is reached.
- Establish clear and measurable standards for compliance with the right to a fair trial as a whole, providing governments with concrete targets to achieve.
- Facilitate monitoring of progress and setbacks over time.
- Reveal new and evolving threats to the rights and safeguards underpinning the right to a fair trial.
- Foster communication and collaboration between NGOs, law firms, academia, international corporations, and governments, enabling knowledge-sharing and joint efforts to tackle existing gaps in implementation of the right to a fair trial.
- Provide data and evidence to support advocacy and policymaking at national, regional, and international levels.
Role of the Data Expert
The Data Expert will provide technical expertise throughout all stages of the project, including preliminary research, methodology development, data instrument creation, and data collection. Tasks will include, among others:
- Conducting data reviews and analyses.
- Conceptualizing and assessing methodologies.
- Producing information products (including an interactive map and country factsheets).
- Supporting the dissemination of findings.
The Data Expert will work closely with the Project Manager and Senior Legal Officer to ensure technical expertise is fully integrated into the project.
Profile
- University degree or specialisation in data science, statistics, or data analysis.
- Expertise in data methodology and analysis: proven experience in designing, implementing, and validating multi-dimensional indexes, dashboards, or comparable data instruments. Skilled in managing complex quantitative and qualitative datasets, including scoring frameworks, weighting, and benchmarking.
- Data visualisation: ability to present complex findings in clear and accessible formats.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal English skills.
- Knowledge of legal and human rights issues is an asset.

Trustee: Finance & Fundraising
