Info sheet: Plea bargaining and police oversight

Published:

Embedded in a fair trial are guarantees which include the ability to confront your accusers, to appeal your conviction and to argue against violation of your rights, such as unreasonable searches and coerced confessions. These rights are all stripped away by plea bargaining.

This info sheet explains how plea bargaining facilitates police misconduct and how plea bargaining reform would help improve police oversight.

As part of our campaign to reduce the over-reliance on plea bargaining in the US, we have also produced a series of films, the first of which address the relationship between plea bargaining and police oversight, click here to watch it.
