Short Updte: Suspending period for Berlin prison sentences expired

FairTrialsAdmin - July 15, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prisoner releases, Prison conditions

In Berlin, sentenced persons have not been put in jail in the past months due to the risk of infection with COVID-19 (see short update of 2 July 2020). For exactly 384 sentenced persons, the imprisonment was suspended on 15 March 2020. This concerned persons with prison sentences of up to three years or with juvenile sentences of up to two years.

On 15 July 2020 the suspending period has expired. The public prosecutor's office will successively send requests to start detention to the sentenced persons, said a spokesperson for the judicial administration. Those who will not show up would be put on the wanted list. The Berlin prisons coordinate the protection of prisoners and staff against infection with the Corona virus on their own responsibility. Last week 3,040 prisoners were imprisoned in Berlin – a historic low (see Der Tagesspiegel press article dated 15 July 2020 in German).
