Short Updates: Northern Ireland's Lord Chief Justice provided guidance for courts

FairTrialsAdmin - April 8, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Delayed or accelerated proceedings, Remote Justice

Northern Ireland's Lord Chief Justice has announced that from 26 March 2020 all court business will be consolidated in The Royal Courts of Justice, Laganside Court in Belfast and three specific Courthouses (Craigavon, Duganonnon, Londonderry). The imposed restrictions mirror those announced by the UK's Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. The guidance clarifies that no members of the public should attend court and all urgent matters will be undertaken through a remote method. Non-urgent matters will be adjourned by a judge without a hearing for a period of eight-weeks, except where parties have come to an agreement on how to proceed with their case. In such instances, the relevant form must be completed in accordance with the guidance and lodged with the appropriate court office by 4.00 PM two working days before the case is scheduled for hearing.
