Short Update: Zimbabwe arrests striking nurses using lockdown as a pretext

FairTrialsAdmin - July 9, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, New criminal offences, Rule of Law

Thirteen nurses planning a protest against low wages and poor working conditions at a Harare hospital were arrested for supposedly violating lockdown regulations. Two of the nurses were freed after admitting guilt. The eleven remaining nurses were freed on bail, but they face up to one year in prison or a fine if convicted. One of the nurses was charged with “inciting public violence” for sharing a video of himself calling on other nurses to join their demonstration.

The Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) and Amnesty International have condemned the arrests as an attempt to stifle ongoing industrial actions. Hyperinflation has made already low salaries worthless, prompting ZINA to call for strikes until nurses are again paid in US Dollars.
