At least seven wounded, dozens detained and looting in shops were the result of a violent protest against the return of a total quarantine ordered by the Paraguayan government following the increase in cases of coronavirus in the Alto Paraná, on the border with Brazil. The protests in Ciudad del Este, the regional capital which has seen 30% of the COVID-19 deaths in a nation of 7 million, began peacefully but turned violent. Following the protests, the department of health eased some of the quarantine restrictions on businesses in the region.
