Short Update: UN High Commissioner says that “exceptional” COVID-19 measures must not be used as cover for human rights violations

FairTrialsAdmin - April 30, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, New criminal offences, Extended police powers, Rule of Law

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has called on governments not to violate human rights under the guise of exceptional or emergency measures.

She said: “There have been numerous reports from different regions that police and other security forces have been using excessive, and at times lethal, force to make people abide by lockdowns and curfews. Such violations have often been committed against people belonging to the poorest and most vulnerable segments of the population”.
