Short Update: UK Lord Chief Justice in favour of remote hearings for civil and family matters

FairTrialsAdmin - May 14, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Remote Justice

The UK Lord Chief Justice made clear that the courts system will never again operate as it did before the coronavirus pandemic, pleading for continued investment in the modernisation of the justice system. While acknowledging problems with litigants accessing technology, he stressed the convenience of remote hearings, notably for civil and family courts. He announced that the Cloud Video Platform will be rolled out to all civil and family courts in the next two weeks. The technology remains sparingly used so far in criminal cases. The Lord stressed that replacing juries by judge-only trials could only be a last resort option.
