Short Update: UK Law Society and Bar Council issue a joint statement on jury trials, court capacity and dealing with the backlog

FairTrialsAdmin - July 6, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Access to a lawyer, Remote Justice

The Law Society and Bar Council of England and Wales have made a joint statement on the proposed government approach to dealing with the Crown Court backlog. The statement sets out that some of the government proposals, including modifications to the use of jury trials and the extension of court hours 'present a threat to the credibility of our justice system'. In response, the Law Society and Bar Council set out an alternative multi-faceted approach which proposes a greater use of part-time judges, technology and of additional court buildings.
