Short Update: UK launched a consultation on doubling sentence for assaulting an emergency worker

FairTrialsAdmin - July 16, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, New criminal offences

The Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act, which entered into force in 2018, modified the offence of common assault or battery when it is committed against emergency workers acting in the course of their duties, with a maximum penalty of 12 months imprisonment. On 13 July 2020, the Government launched a consultation on whether it should double the maximum penalty for assaulting an emergency worker to two years imprisonment. The Lord Chancellor noted that it is particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic that emergency workers are able to do their jobs without the fear of being assaulted. The consultation will run for four weeks, and the Government will seek views from stakeholders, including representative bodies from the emergency services and the judiciary.
