Short Update: UK government shelves plans for early prisoner release

FairTrialsAdmin - May 13, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prisoner releases

The UK government has shelved pre-coronavirus proposals to release some offenders from prison earlier than planned. The government has said it is no longer necessary as fewer cases are currently going to court, easing pressure on the prison system. These proposals pre-date the coronavirus outbreak, and were seen as a way of giving prisoners more time to transition back into their communities, as well as reducing the prison population. They would have resulted in offenders which meet certain criteria, including serving a sentence of less than four years, released 6 months early.

However, some prisoners could still be released under the “COVID early release scheme”.

As of Wednesday 13th May, 390 prisoners and 447 prison staff had tested positive for coronavirus across 74 prisons in England and Wales.
