Short Update: UK government facing court over its response to COVID-19 in prisons

FairTrialsAdmin - April 30, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prisoner releases, Prison conditions

The Howard League and the Prison Reform Trust, two of the leading prison reform charities in the UK, issued a letter before claim to the Secretary of State for Justice, Robert Buckland, on Friday 17 April providing details of their proposed application for judicial review of the government's response to COVID-19 in prisons. The most recent figures from the Ministry of Justice set out that 300 prisoners across 69 prisons in the UK have tested positive for the virus. The Prison Governors Association has suggested that between 10,000 and 15,000 prisoners would need to be released to allow for effective social distancing within prisons. It has been reported that the charities gave the government until Monday 24 April to implement a more rapid release system for prisoners after administrative errors earlier this month  temporarily halted plans to release up to 4000 prison inmates.
