Short Update: UK equalities watchdog warns that online hearings could impede access to justice

FairTrialsAdmin - April 29, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Remote Justice

Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) warned move amid virus to focus on online sessions could hamper rapport and access to justice.  An interim report by EHRC has highlighted concerns about the impact of conducting cases without defendants being present in court, which could disadvantage people with learning disabilities.

Moreover, video consultations are usually limited to 15 minutes, regardless of whether the quality of the link is poor, further impeding defendants' access to justice.
