Short Update: UK announces expansion of prisons to reduce the spread of coronavirus

FairTrialsAdmin - April 15, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prison conditions

The UK Ministry of Justice and Prison Service announced the expansion of the prison estate to protect the National Health Service ("NHS") from coronavirus risk and increase space in prisons. On 9 April 2020, work began on six priority jails to increase space and reduce the spread of coronavirus. Installation of temporary accommodation will begin this week, with the first wave of sites selected for having the highest number of shared cells, lack of in-cell sanitation and high numbers of vulnerable prisoners.
