The Turkish parliament passed a law on 14 April 2020 that could result in the temporary release of more than 40,000 prisoners to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. A similar number is also set be released permanently.
Concerns have been raised however, that the new law excludes some 50,000 prisoners who are accused or convicted of terrorism charges, some of whom are politicians and journalists targeted by the overly broad counter-terrorism laws in Turkey.
