Short Update: Survey in England & Wales suggests that 29% of legal aid barristers are unsure whether they will renew their practising certificates next year

FairTrialsAdmin - July 22, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Access to a lawyer

Following a survey, the Chair of the Bar Council, the professional association for barristers in England and Wales, reported to the Bar Standards Board that 29% of legal aid practitioners and 38 percent of criminal practitioners are unsure that they will renew their practising certificates in 2021. The Bar Council chief executive has stated that the Council intends to take out a £5 million loan as part of the government Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme to address the cash flow problems exacerbated by the lockdown period and the continuing social distancing measures in courts.
