Short Update: Summer recess in the High Court and Court of Appeal could be cancelled in bid to battle backlog

FairTrialsAdmin - May 15, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Delayed or accelerated proceedings

It has been reported that the traditional two-month summer recess for the High Court and the Court of Appeal could potentially be cancelled in order to progress the case backlog resulting from lockdown measures. It has also been suggested that evening and weekend magistrates' court hearings be extended across England and Wales to help address the number of outstanding cases. These suggestions have been well received by the Chair of the Criminal Bar Association as 'strong and welcome signal'.
