Short Update: In Spain, organisations seek additional access to medical care for detainees

FairTrialsAdmin - March 30, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prison conditions

Several non-governmental organisations have filed petitions asking for increased access to medical care for detainees citing the European Council and World Health Organization’s declaration of the importance of attending to prison populations in order to prevent widespread infection.

Prison visits have been fully suspended, leaving attorneys to consult with their detained clients by phone. Prison officials have widened the timeframe allowed for phone calls and temporarily eliminated the standard charges. Additionally, all workshops, classes, and other group activities have also been postponed indefinitely.
