Short Update: Prison officials in England and Wales fear easing of restrictions in prisons could lead to a second wave of COVID-19

FT Admin - June 15, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, prison conditions

On 9 June 2020, it was reported that while the restrictions on the prison estate averted large-scale COVID-19 related deaths, prison officials feared that the easing of restrictions could lead to a second wave of the virus.

Last month, inspectors visited three prisons across the country to assess their responses to the pandemic. Not all prisons responded well, and there were disparities in social distancing and evidence of increased self-harm in some jails.
