Short Update: Political prisoners in Venezuela at high risk of contracting COVID

FT Admin - August 26, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prison conditions, Access to Justice

The NGO Justicia Venezolana has reported that 260 political prisoners in military prisons in Venezuela are at a high risk of contracting COVID-19. Criminal proceedings have been suspended and courts have been closed since the beginning of the pandemic, with the exception of urgent cases. Justicia Venezolana has argued that under the Penal Code, criminal justice is a permanent function of the state and cannot be suspended.
