Short Update: Police station legal assistance given remotely in Northern Ireland

FairTrialsAdmin - April 27, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Remote Justice, Access to a lawyer

A criminal lawyer acted remotely for a defendant during a police interview for the first time in Northern Ireland earlier this week. Following a threat of legal action on fair trial rights grounds, the police in Northern Ireland installed a mechanism so that the defendant’s lawyer could participate during the interview via Skype.

The Law Society in Northern Ireland is reported to be in discussions with the police to find solutions to the challenges to police station legal assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
