Short Update: Philippines releases nearly 10 000 prisoners to curb the spread of virus in prisons

FairTrialsAdmin - May 4, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prisoner releases, prison conditions

After reports of COVID-19 infections in some of the country’s most overcrowded prisons, the Philippines has released nearly 10 000 prisoners. The Supreme Court issued a directive to lower courts to release pre-trial detainees that could not afford bail and those sentenced to six months or less. Vulnerable prisoners such as the elderly and those with poor health condition are also among the released.

Implementation of physical distancing is impossible in prisons across the country as prison cells sometimes hold up to five times more inmates than their capacity due to inadequate infrastructure and overburdened judicial system.
