Short Update: Paraguay holds oral hearings through virtual platforms in courts and jails

The Judicial System of Paraguay has started to hold oral hearings through virtual platforms, with the aim of ensuring that defendants’ and inmates’ right of access to a lawyer is guaranteed.  

On June 18th, in response to COVID-19, the first virtual oral hearing was held in the city of Paraguari in an alleged homicide case. On June 29th, the first virtual oral hearing was held in the city of Encarnacion in an alleged homicide case.  

On July 10th, it was announced that members of the Justice System held a virtual hearing with several inmates at the Buen Pastor Jail. On July 13th, an oral hearing was held through virtual platforms joining together the Courts of Concepcion, the Jails of Concepcion and the Jails of Tacumbu.
