Short Update: Overcrowded Louisiana prison inundated with COVID-19 cases

FT Admin - June 9, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, prison conditions, Prison monitoring

A Louisiana prison, overcrowded as a result of a flood four years ago in 2016, has been inundated with COVID-19 cases. Social distancing is practically impossible inside the female prison dorms as 70 women share three toilets and four sinks in one room . At one prison, 87% of inmates in one building tested positive for COVID-19. The rate at another was more than 60%. The prison was described as “unsuitable” in 2019.

Louisiana men's prisons may have so far avoided major outbreaks, however, there has only been limited testing at those facilities. Male prisoners who do test positive are generally moved to individual cells or into other isolated areas, but these options aren’t easily available in the women's facilities.
