Figures released by the Ministry of Justice show that over 1,000 prisoners were released into homelessness between 23 March and 30 April. The statistics set out that during this time 840 men, 89 women and 85 young adults (aged 18 to 24) were released into rough sleeping or other forms of homelessness between 23 March, when the lockdown was imposed, and 30 April.
An additional 1,209 men, women and young adults were released with unknown accommodation circumstances within the same time period. In response to these figures, the Ministry of Justice has secured additional funding which will run until 26 June, at which point it will be subject to review, in order to appropriately house individuals released from prison.
