Short Update: NYPD ignores calls for police officers to wear masks during protests

FairTrialsAdmin - June 12, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Extended police powers

The NYPD has been criticised for the failure by their officers to wear masks or other types of PPE whilst policing protests. This is despite an official policy requiring them to do so, and calls by the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, to protect themselves and the public in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NYPD has explained that police officers may be reluctant to wear masks given the heat and the challenging circumstances they are working in, but critiques are doubting this excuse, given that police officers are fully prepared to wear full riot gear whilst carrying out their duties.
