Nigeria recently released 7,813 inmates from the Nigeria Correctional Service centres around the country due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the outbreaks especially within prisons. According to Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Nigeria’s prisons are inadequate and are “currently operating at more than 150 per cent of their capacity” Malami continued to mention Nigeria’s initiatives to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which “have so far led to the release of the inmates while simultaneously reducing the instances of unnecessary test and we intend to sustain this momentum.”
