New York governor has doubled the fines for non-compliance with stay-at-home orders to 1000 USD. Fines usually involve significant surcharges covering public defender registration fees, filing clerk and court fees and other costs, therefore criminal justice advocates have expressed their concerns that these fines are too punitive and will disproportionately affect the poor. Instead of relying on policing and excessive fines, local and state leadership are called to use public health approaches to address public health problems.
