The International Prison Observatory has criticised measures in Belgium to restrict prison visits by lawyers in Belgium as a violation of the right to a fair trial. The measures were issued by the General Directorate for Penitentiary Establishments, and it prevents lawyers from visiting their clients in prison, unless they bring their own ‘FFP2’ face mask – something that not all lawyers own. Lawyers have the option, instead, of leaving written notes for their clients, but this has been criticised as being a poor substitute.
