Emergency measures in Terminal Island federal prison in Sand Pedro, California have managed to halt one of the worst outbreaks of COVID-19 in federal penal system. More than 700 inmates, which account for nearly 70% of the facility’s population had been tested positive for the coronavirus.
The introduction of segregation policy and aggressive testing have halted the spread of infection with more than 567 inmates recovered. Eight inmates died of the virus.
Containment of the outbreak in Terminal Island prison, however, has not been hailed as success story since it has cost the lives of eight inmates with other cut off from email and phone calls for weeks unable to contact desperate family members in search of information about their loved ones.
