Short Update: Lawyers in Belgium call for equal access to the case file amid COVID-19 crisis

FairTrialsAdmin - April 6, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Remote Justice

Criminal lawyers in Belgium have raised concerns that the COVID-19 crisis is restricting their access to case files, and that this is undermining their ability to defend their clients. Whereas magistrates and public prosecutors have access to software that allows them to access digitised case files remotely, defence lawyers do not – and it has been suggested as a result, lawyers are being denied access to case files in about 50% of cases of non-detained defendants.
