Short Update: Ireland enacts far-reaching legislation granting the health minister special powers

FairTrialsAdmin - March 30, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Extended police powers

Ireland enacted far-reaching legalisation on 19 March granting the health minister emergency special powers. It provides for the restriction movement and mass gatherings; detaining infected people that refuse to self-isolate; and placing entire areas under lockdown. Those found in breach face fines or imprisonment. The Act is set to sunset on 9 November 2020.

Concerningly, it contains as yet undefined provisions that allow for “any other measures” deemed to slow the virus spreading.
