Short Update: Hundreds of pregnant women remain in US prisons

FairTrialsAdmin - May 28, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prisoner releases, Prison conditions

While Congress has given federal prison authorities more discretion to send inmates home during the pandemic, hundreds of pregnant women are still reportedly incarcerated. The practices around releasing pregnant prisoners because of the pandemic remain ambiguous and greatly vary from State to State. Nationwide, about 60 pregnant people have been released from state prison facilities. Reports indicated that incarcerated pregnant women are “much more likely” to get infected and have higher rates of underlying conditions putting them at higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19.

Concerns about pregnant women's safety in prisons and halfway houses have intensified since Andrea Circle Bear died last month after testing positive for COVID-19 and having her baby while on a ventilator.
