Short Update: Human rights organisations slam extended coronavirus restrictions for refugees and migrants in Greece

FairTrialsAdmin - July 22, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Rule of Law, Extended police powers

26 human rights organizations working with refugees and migrants in Greece, issued a statement on 17th July, expressing their concern regarding  the government’s decision to impose – once again – a movement restriction at all refugee hosting sites in the context of the pandemic management. It is noted that the coronavirus should not be used as a tool to detain refugees and migrants, while asking for the transfer of people – especially the vulnerable – to safe hosting structures.

In a similar tone, an announcement by MSF (16/7) stated that in the current phase of the COVID-19 epidemic in Greece, this measure is absolutely unjustified from a public health point of view – it is discriminatory towards people that don’t represent a risk and contributes to their stigmatisation, while putting them further at risk.
