Short Update: Germany restricts prison visits due to COVID-19

FairTrialsAdmin - April 7, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prison conditions, Access to a lawyer

Many German Federal States ("Bundsländer") have significantly restricted or prohibited the visiting of prisoners.

For example, the Hessian Ministry of Justice has suspended visits for prisoners until further notice in order to avoid the spread of COVID-19 in prisons. Visits by defense lawyers and consular staff are still possible but should preferably be conducted through a separating screen. There is still a possibility of communicating with the prisoners, especially by telephone, and in individual cases also by video calls.
