Short Update: Germany introduces measures in courts and public prosecutor's offices to protect citizens and judicial staff from COVID-19

FairTrialsAdmin - April 7, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Delayed or accelerated proceedings

Courts and public prosecutor's offices in Germany are still operating. In Hesse, for example, in order to protect both judicial staff and citizens from COVID-19, the accessibility of the courts and public prosecutor's offices is restricted. People who have stayed in regions affected by the COVID-19 crisis or had contact with infected persons within the last 14 days are not allowed to enter court buildings. The same restrictions apply to persons who have respiratory problems which may indicate infection with the COVID-19 virus.

Courts or public prosecutor's offices are encouraged to be contacted only in urgent matters that cannot be postponed with requests primarily be made by telephone, fax or in writing. As an alternative to personal visits, the Digital Service Point of the Hessian Justice Department can be reached via a state-wide toll-free telephone number or by e-mail. Decisions to cancel or postpone court hearings are taken by the courts based on their judicial independence. However, many of the court hearings already scheduled for the coming weeks are expected to be postponed.
