Short Update: German public prosecutor agrees to end German Love Parade proceedings as statute of limitations approaches amid COIVD-19 pandemic

FairTrialsAdmin - April 28, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Delayed or accelerated proceedings

On 17 April 2020 the Duisburg public prosecutor's office agreed to terminate the Love Parade proceedings. At the end of July – 10 years after the German Love Parade disaster – the proceedings are threatened by the statute of limitations. After more than 180 trial days, it became apparent that due to the interruption caused by COVID-19, the trial is unlikely to be completed by then. The deadline for all parties to the proceedings to submit statements on the proposed termination expires on Monday, 20th April. After that, the court will decide on further action.
