Short Update: German court intends to terminate Love Parade proceedings due to COVID-19

FairTrialsAdmin - April 8, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Delayed or accelerated proceedings

On 7 April 2020 the regional court ("Landgericht") of Duisburg proposed to terminate the Love Parade criminal proceedings because of COVID-19. A crowd disaster at the 2010 Love Parade electronic dance music festival in Duisburg, Germany, caused the deaths of 21 people from suffocation. At least 500 more were injured. The public prosecutor's office and also the defendants would have to agree to a premature termination without a verdict or acquittal. Whether they will do so is not yet clear. They are supposed to comment on this by 20 April 2020. The trial is almost ten years old. The allegations of negligent homicide will expire at the end of July. Due to COVID-19, the court considers it unlikely to clarify the facts of the case by then. In addition, the court regards the possible guilt of the three defendants as minor (see Tagesschau press article dated 7 April 2020 in German).
