Short Update: Few signs of progress in Cambodia following an announcement in May to release 10,000 prisoners due to COVID-19

FairTrialsAdmin - July 24, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prisoner releases, prison conditions

NGOs have called on the Cambodian authorities to keep its promise of releasing 10,000 prisoners due to COVID-19. In May this year, the government had announced reforms to ease overcrowding in prisons. However, it has so far failed to disclose how many prisoners have been released since then. Amnesty International and the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights repeated their condemnation of the poor prison conditions in the country, and called on the authorities to accelerate the implementation of the reforms.
