FairTrialsAdmin - April 28, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates

European Prison Observatory has issued the third COVID-19 update on prisons in Europe. It covers updates on implementation of COVID-19-related public health measures in prisons of 12 EU Member States and Turkey. Among the measures taken by the states in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in prisons are releases of prisoners, suspension of custodial sentences, bans on visits, delivery of parcels and requirement for the prison staff to wear masks and other personal protective equipment.

Alarming practices such as reduction of telephone time to 10 minutes a day, inability to access lawyer and telephone calls not being free of charge have been reported in prisons in Austria. France and Portugal respectively.
