Short Update: England and Wales increases the Victim Surcharge by 5%

On 6 April 2020, the Ministry of Justice distributed a circular that the Victim Surcharge will be increased by 5 % from 14 April 2020 onwards. The Victim Surcharge was introduced in 2007, and its purpose is to ensure that offenders hold some responsibility towards the cost of supporting victims and witnesses. 

Those who are convicted of covid-19 related offences, such as directing coughs at emergency workers, will be ordered to pay the Victim Surcharge. On 6 April, a man who was jailed for burglary and for coughing at the police officer who detailed him was ordered to pay £149
