Nineteen more prisoners and two prison guards have tested positive for COVID-19 across two different prisons in Ecuador. This comes a week after Ecuadorian authorities admitted that 420 incarcerated people had tested positive in Ambato Prison, accounting for two-thirds of the prison’s 666 inmates. There had been riots at Ambato in April due to inmate fears regarding positive COVID-19 cases in the prison, but the government insisted that there were zero cases there.
Ecuador has been hit hard by COVID-19, and the government is moving to implement rapid testing in prisons across the country to prevent further spread.
