Short Update: Ecuador releases 971 low-risk prisoners due to COVID-19

FairTrialsAdmin - July 20, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prisoner releases, Remote Justice

Between 16 March and 22 June, 971 prisoners were granted pre-release from Ecuadorean prisons. However, this right is only granted to low risk prisoners. The process for requesting pre-release has been streamlined in order to reduce the number of prisoners and avoid the spread of coronavirus. To facilitate the process the authorities have authorised virtual channels, including videoconferencing, to submit requests for pre-release. In May 591 requests for pre-release were submitted. It has been reported that there are not enough judges to review all of the requests that are being submitted which may lead to an oversaturation of the system.
