The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred the deployment of a wide range of automated decision-making (ADM) systems across Europe. Both local administrations and national governments have invested in applications and devices aimed at tracking and containing the outbreak COVID-19 through automation, including track and trace apps on smart phones, QR codes to record check ins in public places and the use of AI to analyse large masses of aggregate population data.
Algorithm Watch has published a report that aims to map and explore ADM systems that have been deployed throughout Europe as a consequence of the COVID-19 outbreak. It provides a first snapshot of the ADM systems deployed against the virus in the 16 European countries investigated in the ‘Automating Society’ project.
