Short Update: Court closures lead to extended pre-trial detention for New York defendants

FT Admin - May 4, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Extended pre-trial detention, Court closures

Court closures in New York have resulted in extended pre-trial detention for some defendants. Laws that would ordinarily prevent detention of over 6 days without indictment by a grand jury have been suspended. Court closures however mean that grand jury hearings are no longer taking place and even defendants who could have their cases resolved within days are languishing in detention.
