Short Update: Concerns raised about the safety of overcrowded prisons in Philippines as more people die of suspected cases of COVID-19

FairTrialsAdmin - June 19, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, prison conditions

Prisoners at New Bilibid Jail in the Philippines are in fear for their safety, as an increasing number of inmates are dying, possibly of COVID-19. A significant number of prisoners are Chinese immigrants, and overcrowding (the prison is at more than 4 times its maximum capacity) and poor hygiene are being blamed for the prevalence of infections. The Supreme Court in the Philippines had ordered the released of more than 10,000 inmates in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but critiques have said that more needs to be done to ensure more people are released to ease overcrowding.
