Short Update: Cheshire open jail criticised for COVID-19 restrictions

FairTrialsAdmin - July 2, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, prison conditions, Prison monitoring

UK Inspectorate of Prisons concluded that the policy imposed in Thorn Cross open jail in Cheshire to prevent prisoners from moving around the jail 'was not defensible' and a striking variation from approaches adopted at other inspected open prisons HMP Ford and HMP Sudbury.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Thorn Cross open jail (an institution with minimal supervision which usually allows prisoners to move around the premises) locked the external doors to the house units for much of the day with prisoners only allowed outside at designated exercise times.
