Short Update: Call for alternatives to incarceration in Italy

FairTrialsAdmin - March 30, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Prisoner releases

Citing prison conditions and the potential for the spread of Covid-19, organisations in Italy have called for amnesty and pardons for some detainees, including those in pre-trial detention. Antigone has published a report on the situation and issued recommendations.

Courts are being told to consider alternatives to incarceration, such as house arrest and early probation.

The measures are designed to reduce overcrowding and help resist the spread of the virus. Currently, overcrowding is exacerbating the risks and leading to protests and riots in prisons across the country. The judge noted that the issue does not just threaten the health of the inmates but also constitutes a threat to public health overall.
