Short Update: Budget cuts leave the Ecuadorean court system struggling to fund remote justice

FairTrialsAdmin - July 29, 2020 - COVID-19 Updates, Remote Justice

Budget cuts for the justice system in Ecuador totalled almost $13 million in 2020. It is reported that cuts are making it difficult for the justice system to fulfil its role in guaranteeing equal access to justice for Ecuadoreans. Online systems have become essential during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, due to the lack of available resources the justice system has struggled to obtain licences for technology services in order to facilitate the use of online platforms. A pilot programme was developed to allow online submissions and proceedings, however, there are insufficient resources to implement the pilot on a national level.
